Can You Pass a DOT Physical With a Hearing Aid?

Yes. Many CDL drivers can pass a DOT physical with a hearing aid. The key issue is not whether you wear a hearing aid. The issue is whether you meet the FMCSA hearing standard during the exam.

If you hear well enough with your hearing aid to meet the required standard, you may still qualify for a DOT medical card.

What Is the FMCSA Standard to Fail a Hearing Test?

That means the examiner is looking for one of two things:

• You can hear a forced whisper from at least 5 feet away in your better ear, with or without a hearing aid
• Or you pass an audiometric test showing hearing loss of 40 dB or less on average in the better ear at the required frequencies

If you fail both, you do not meet the FMCSA hearing standard for interstate commercial driving.

What Happens During the DOT Hearing Test?

1. Forced Whisper Test

The medical examiner may start with the forced whisper test. Typically, the driver turns one ear toward the examiner while the other ear is covered. The examiner whispers words or numbers from about 5 feet away.

2. Audiometric Test

If the whisper test is not passed, the examiner may require an audiometric test. This measures hearing levels in decibels at the FMCSA-required frequencies.

If you use a hearing aid and qualify with it, that should be documented, and you are expected to use it while driving.
